How to select electric motors and MCUs?
    2015-05-11
What is electric motor? A electric motor is a device which can transform electric energy into mechanical energy.

Then what is MCU? A MCU is an unit which can not only control motors’ rotation speed but also guarantee motors’ regular work.

Motors’ rotation and shutoff are always controlled by MCUs. So we can say that motors only work passively.

If we compare a motor to a lamp, then a MCU were the switch.

If we compare a motor to a person’s heart, then a MCU were the nerve center.

So how closely a MCU matches a motor is vital to us.

Then how should we select electric motors and MCUs?
To a electric vehicle, the motor is one of the core components. It is the “heart” of the car which can continuously output mechanic energy.

As a matter of fact, the MCU is an soft-start optimization of the electric motor. Its core function is to protect the motor as well as meet customers’ other practical demands.

As mentioned at the beginning, motors are just devices which transform electric energy to mechanic energy. They are intuitive. They can be distinguished by appearance, weight and the torque output easily while MCUs are more complex and sophisticated. MCUs are like people’s nerve center. We can not understand them thoroughly then we feel confused.

Some of our customers ask us : “Who are producing good MCUs?”

We don’t evaluate MCU producers here. But we can tell you that the quality of MCUs is mainly reflected in its ability to guarantee the motor’s regular work and protect it.

So a good MCU should protect the motor and meet the vehicle’s demand at the same time.

A motor and a MCU are like a pair of comrades-in-arms. They got each other’s back. So the motor can “fight the battle” bravely without worries only if it has a reliable companion(MCU). (eg. The exciting current and armature current of separately excited dc motor need to be controlled by MCU.)

Motors’ rotation and shutoff are always controlled by MCUs so that motors only work passively. For a separately excited dc motor, how closely the switch(MCU) matches it is especially important.
Above all, matching is more important than selecting.
